eScripts Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I have a question that isn't answered here...
Check out the other FAQ in your PIC, or by all means, please contact us at [email protected] and ask! We will address your question as quickly as possible -- and if it's a question of relevance to all of our associated authors, we will probably add the answer to this very FAQ. Close
How do I order eScripts with my author discount?
Ordering eScripts will be very similar to ordering other editions of your play. The easiest way is by visiting the PIC main page and clicking the "Order books with author discount" link. Be sure to follow all instructions. Close
Will I be able to update my play before it is converted to an eScript?
The process of converting the plays as they are currently formatted does not allow us the flexibility to update and reformat the content of the plays. Close
Will I still receive notifications when people purchase my play as an eScript?
Yes, just the same as you do with book sales right now. Since eScripts will initially all be sold through the Playscripts website, you will still receive the same sales information that you currently receive for hard copy book sales. All sales can be seen in your Playwright Information Center (PIC). Close
Are there any costs to publish digitally? Because it doesn’t seem like there would be. There’s no paper.
Creating a digital edition requires antipiracy software, digital warehousing, extra legal support, and programmers to adapt each title for the different formats. That’s on top of the regular costs of turning a manuscript into a finished product. Close
What will eScripts sell for?
As of right now, all ePub files will be sold at a list price of $9.99. PDF cast sets will sell at a flat rate which will be based on the number of allowable prints. Close
Do the playwright royalties for eScripts differ from hard copy acting edition sales?
Yes. Playscripts has been closely monitoring developments in digital publishing, including author compensation. The author royalty percentage for eScripts is much higher than for hard copy book sales and is outlined in your eScripts Amendment. Our goal is to be as transparent and as fair as possible. Authors will know exactly how many eScripts have been sold and at what price, just as they do now with hard copy editions. Close
What about Amazon Kindle and iTunes?
To start, digital editions of Playscripts plays will only be available through the Playscripts website. Through the use of certain apps, like Bluefire Reader, eScripts will be able to be read on Kindle Fire and iPad. In the future, we will consider making plays available as Kindle editions, iBooks, and through other third-party sellers. Close
And why aren’t all my plays available as eScripts?
We’re working hard to convert our entire catalog of plays as soon as possible. Naturally, some plays will be released earlier than others and the timing of releases depends on many factors. So stay tuned! Close
When will eScripts be available?
As soon as possible, and as early as Fall 2012. Close
Will Playscripts still be printing hard copy, traditional acting editions of my plays?
Yes. Essentially, eScripts will be additional editions of your play. Close
What does DRM-Protected mean?
This acronym stands for Digital Rights Management, a technology used to protect digital products from copyright infringement. When a customer buys a DRM-protected eScript, the eScript is encrypted specifically for that customer. To view the eScript, they must activate their Adobe account, a process that verifies their identity and provides an electronic key for opening their eScript. Close
Whoa, wait, you’re going to let people print the play? How are the plays protected?
We’re glad you brought that up. With the advanced technology of Adobe DRM, each PDF is encrypted with a set number of times the file can be printed. This is specified by the Playscripts publication staff, based on the cast size of the play. Both editions of our eScripts (ePubs and PDFs) support all of the capabilities of Adobe DRM for managing and securing content. Close
What happens after the eScript is downloaded?
If a customer has ordered an eScript for perusal purposes, it can be read on a personal computer or an eReader. If a production group decides to perform the play, they order performances. They will then have the option of purchasing a cast set of hard copy acting editions, or a PDF production pack that they can print from their computer. Close
What is Adobe Digital Editions?
Adobe Digital Editions is a program that offers a simplified, engaging way to acquire, manage, and read eBooks and other kinds of digital publications. Close
So how is this going to work on the Playscripts website?
Before downloading an eScript, customers must first download Adobe Digital Editions software and create an Adobe account (both free). This only has to be done once, however, and after it is, the software creates a "library" on your personal computer that is very user-friendly and organized. Close
What exactly is an ePub file?
ePub is the industry-standard format for eBook content that makes it possible to view text on both large displays such as a desktop computer and small screens like a smartphone. The text is “reflowable”, meaning the font size and line breaks adjust based on the size of the screen for easy reading. This is different than a PDF (Portable Document Format). PDF pages are set, which means the text cannot “reflow” or easily adjust to different screen sizes like ePub files. Close
How is digital publishing different for play publishers?
Unlike traditional trade publishing, play publishing comes with the unique challenges associated with being linked to play licensing. We’ve found the needs of our customers are two-fold: individual readers want to be able to access the plays for perusal purposes, and production groups want be able to use them for rehearsals. This is why eScripts will be available both as an ePub file for reading on personal computers, tablet devices and eReaders (i.e. Nook, iPad, Kindle Fire, Kobo, Sony); and as a printable PDF cast set for theaters or schools looking to perform the script. Close
Why does Playscripts want to start offering digital editions?
We are constantly looking to find new and innovative ways to get your plays in the hands of theaters, schools, production groups, and theater lovers. We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of the latest technology available. Digital publications have taken the literary world by storm, and forever changed the landscape of how people find and read books. Similarly, the theater community is craving a wider variety of ways to access and interact with new plays. Close
What are eScripts?
Playscripts has begun the process of converting our vast catalog of exciting plays from hard acting editions into digital editions. eScripts is what we’ve chosen to name these digital editions. Catchy, right? Close
